Discovering the Island Beyond Your All-Inclusive
While the resort gave us everything we needed for a relaxing vacation, exploring Barbados made the trip even better. There's something magical about stepping beyond the resort gates and discovering what makes an island truly come alive. From vibrant local experiences to thrilling water adventures, Barbados offers travelers the perfect balance of luxury relaxation and authentic Caribbean exploration.
Must-Do Excursion #1: Sea Turtle Snorkeling Catamaran
Swimming with Barbados' Gentle Giants
One of our absolute favorite experiences was booking a catamaran cruise that took us into the crystal-clear waters where we snorkeled and swam with sea turtles. These magnificent creatures are native to Barbados, and encountering them in their natural habitat is truly humbling.
The afternoon didn't end on the water — as we sailed back to shore, the boat transformed into a floating celebration. Live music filled the air, local delicacies were served, and impromptu dance circles broke out on deck. It's the kind of excursion that makes you fall in love with the island twice — once for the scenery, and again for the energy and warmth of the Caribbean spirit.
Pro Tip: Book your catamaran in advance through your Travel Agent, resort concierge or a trusted local tour operator. Most cruises include snorkeling gear, refreshments, and instruction for beginners. The experience typically lasts 4-5 hours and is suitable for swimmers of all levels.
Must-Do Excursion #2: Oistins Fish Fry — A Friday Night Tradition
Where Locals Gather for Authentic Barbadian Cuisine
If you visit Barbados and skip Oistins Fish Fry, you're missing out on one of the island's most authentic cultural experiences. This weekly gathering — held every Friday night in the fishing village of Oistins — is where locals and visitors converge for incredible fresh seafood, island vibes, and genuine Caribbean hospitality.
Our Experience:
We ventured off-resort into Oistins and arrived by 6 p.m., which proved to be the perfect timing — we arranged round trip transportation via concierge's desk. The crowds were manageable, and we had plenty of time to explore the different vendor stalls without feeling rushed.
We immediately spotted Ms. Pat's stand, and the line was impressive — a telltale sign we were in the right place. We ordered the grilled snapper, and it absolutely lived up to the hype. Perfectly seasoned, flaky, and fresh, it's the kind of meal you'll crave long after your vacation ends.
My husband ventured to a different stand and discovered barbecue pig tails that were apparently so exceptional (I don't eat pork), he's been trying to recreate them at home ever since! (If you happen to find the vendor's secret recipe, let us know.)
Oistins Fish Fry Pro Tips:
- Arrive by 6 p.m. to avoid massive crowds (though the energy builds as the night progresses)
- Come hungry — portions are generous and prices are incredibly reasonable
- Bring cash — not all vendors accept card payments
- Try multiple vendors — each stand specializes in different seafood preparations
- Stay for the atmosphere — locals often play music, and the vibe is pure Caribbean joy
- Dress casual — this is a laid-back, beachside experience
Must-Do Activity #3: Flying Dress Photoshoot
Creating Magical Memories in Paradise
One of my favorite moments from our Barbados vacation wasn't planned as a major activity — it was booking a Flying Dress photoshoot with one of my best friends. These whimsical photoshoots have become increasingly popular in Barbados and other known destinations, and for good reason: they create stunning, Instagram-worthy memories against the island's breathtaking backdrop.
We worked with a local photographer who understood how to capture movement, emotion, and the natural beauty of Barbados. We took photos individually to celebrate our personal moments, and then with our spouses to capture our relationships in a fun, playful way. The result? Photos that are absolute keepsakes — the kind you frame, share proudly, and treasure for years to come.
Flying Dress Photoshoot Details:
- Duration: Typically 1-2 hours
- Best Locations: the photographer will choose; however, here are a few beautiful locations: Carlisle Bay, Cherry Tree Hill, Bathsheba on the east coast, or private beaches
- What to Bring/Wear: I HIGHLY recommend wearing swimwear (we changed into the dress on the beach). Our bathing suits were well hidden under the dress. The flowing dress was provided and we selected our dress color in advance. Wear comfortable shoes for walking to photo spots, and a sense of adventure
- Price Range: Usually $150-$400 depending on the photographer and package
- Booking: Reserve through your resort concierge or search local photographers on social media. We made arrangements via WhatsApp prior to arrival in Barbados. The process was seamless.
